It is always the light that fascinates me. The movement, the  play of light and the subtle  change of colour with every hour of the day. From the hazy mornings of the West Country to the bright mid day sun of India. Not to say that the artificial light in a studio is no less fascinating, as of course  it also changes throughout the day , and can provide almost abstract shapes to make an interesting composition .I work quickly and  have always tried to capture the moment – whether working in my studio from sketches or working outside in the elements .

My subject matter is immense and I paint whatever appeals to me, whether it be a horse, a moored dinghy, seascape, landscape or portrait. But of course, light and colour and composition are essential and I endeavour to paint with these three principles in mind.

I have recently taken a slightly abstract slant on my work and been experimenting with what I call abstract still life. I have been influenced by the American painter Diebenkorn with his abstract shapes and use of colour, and Bonnard with his interesting slant on life and his minimal palette.  It has been a very interesting journey and I think it has helped with the composition of all of my paintings.

I studied Graphic Design at St Martins School of Art in London in the 60s and after 15 years of Art Directing I took up painting.  I have exhibited at The RA Summer Exhibition, The RBA, and more recently the NEAC, I am also an Associate Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and won the Crossgate Gallery Award one year.

I have a studio in Chobham Surrey and in Salcombe Devon and have regularly exhibited at Coves Quay Gallery in Salcombe for many years selling seascapes.
